The history of Vietnamese art is loosely recorded in this three-story museum, which was once a boardinghouse for French girls who lived in Indochina. The exhibits are in chronological order, beginning with collection of Stone and Bronze Age works of art on the third floor. There are also examples of wood sculpture and lacquer work, including an impressive 16th-century statue that came from the Hoi Ha Pagoda.
There are some oil and watercolor paintings on the lower floors by such Vietnamese artists such as Bui Xuan Phai, Nguyen Tu Nghiem, and To Ngoc Van. The main display room on the first floor contains some of the most dramatic lacquer painting in Vietnam along with great examples of so-called combat art socialist realism.
There are very few recent works by any of Vietnam's younger painters. The reason being that these artists tend to show their works in stylish galleries where they might sell for a good price. The fact is that the Ministry of Culture doesn't have that much money and wouldn't be able to afford the work of Vietnam's contemporary artists. Many of the exhibits get moved around a lot and so it's not unusual to find the museum closed on some days.
